Death: Nov. 21, 1969

John the son of John J. Hayden Sr. and Mary M. Hayden of Somerville MA, entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on December 30, 1968 in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam on June 25 1969, and was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During a search and clear operation southwest near the summit of Hill 953 in Que Son District the patrol uncovered an enemy base camp consisting of several huts. The Marines began to destroy the complex and during the process received a heavy volume of small arms fire. Returning fire they began to pursue their aggressors until contact was broken by the enemy force that melted into the heavy jungle growth. During the pursuit and fire fight, one Marine was wounded and PFC Hayden was killed in action as a result of hostile gunfire.
