During a search and clear operation southwest near the summit of Hill 953 in Que Son District the patrol uncovered an enemy base camp consisting of several huts. The Marines began to destroy the complex and during the process received a heavy volume of small arms fire. Returning fire they began to pursue their aggressors until contact was broken by the enemy force that melted into the heavy jungle growth. During the pursuit and fire fight, one Marine was wounded and PFC Hayden was killed in action as a result of hostile gunfire.
