Arlond Leroy Hawkins, passed away on May 19, 2009, surrounded by his family in St. George, Utah. He was born May 2, 1924 in Lewiston, Utah to Alfred Leroy and Katie Evalena Brown Hawkins. He married Dorothy Whitney on April 8, 1943 in the St. George LDS Temple.
Arlond was raised in Blanding, Utah until he was 16 years old. He then moved to St. George, Utah, where he graduated from Dixie High School and attended Dixie College before answering his country's call and joining the United States Army in December 1943, where he served in the infantry, specializing in setting up firing and maintenance of the mortar weapons.
After the war, Arlond remained in Germany with the U.S. occupation force, where he taught carpentry in school. After returning to Utah, he bought a farm in Hurricane, and excelled as a farmer and dairy man, receiving many awards for his work. The cows on the farm were often named for people in the community, as new names were needed, Arlond would pick the name of the next customer who came through the door.
In October 1977, Arlond and Dorothy left to serve an LDS mission in Dallas, Texas. After being released, they returned to Texas, where they went back into the dairy business and spent the next 15 years farming until the money was gone and they returned to Southern Utah in 1991. They settled in LaVerkin, where Arlond worked for Bob and Pattie Litchfield landscaping and gardening. This was the job of his dreams. He loved making things beautiful. He worked at this job until this past February. The family wishes to express our love and appreciation to Bob and Pattie.
Arlond had a strong and living testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and served the church he so dearly loved as a Branch President, Elders Quorum President, Ward Mission Leader, home teacher and temple ordinance worker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Evelyn, daugther Arlene, grandchildren Jason Wilkinson, Milton and Katie Burgess. Also son-in-law, Verl Wilkinson.
He is survived by sons Kenneth (Leslie), David (Marilyn) and his beloved daughters Deaun Wilkinson, Ilene (Craig) Langston, Beverly (Joe) Burgess, Carylee (Paul) Heideman, Marsha (Val) Cook, and Lula Whittwer. Also his 42 grandchildren and 78 great grandchildren.
