Inez "Irene" Ardery, 76, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.
She was born May 10, 1928, at Moreland, Okla., to Lonwell F. and Lola Welling Hawkins. After high school graduation, she attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University at Alva, and went to summer school at Emporia State University. She taught school for one year at Oklahoma and then taught at Colusa Elementary in northeast Haskell County.
On April 18, 1948, she married Russell Ardery at Garden City. They lived on the Ardery homestead before moving to a small horse farm in the Dodge City area in 1982. They moved to Manor of the Plains in 2001.
Mrs. Ardery worked in the fabrics department as Wal-Mart in Dodge City. A homemaker, she also was a substitute teacher for the Copeland school district and assisted her husband on the family farm. She loved to participate in community activities, was a sewing and clothing leader in 4-H, assisted at the county fairs, and was a member of Colusa EHU and Church of the Nazarene in Garden City and Dodge City. Her hobbies were quilting, sewing for her grandchildren, baking, gardening, and entertaining family and friends.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters; Connie Reinert of Ensign, and Kathy Tuxhorn of Montezuma; two sons, Ross and Rick Ardery, both of Copeland; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Ada Pittman of Alma, Ark; and three brothers, Delson Hawkins of Flora Vista, N.M., Wayne Hawkins of Woodward, Okla., and Marvin Hawkins of Alpena, Ark. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Dale, Nard and Oran Hawkins.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Church of the Nazarene, Dodge City, with the Rev. Michael Burns officiating. A dinner for the family and friends will be served at noon Monday at the church. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
Visitation hours are noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Manor of the Plains, Hospice of the Prairie or Southwest Community Scholarship Foundation, all in care of Swaim Funeral Home, 1901 Sixth Ave., Dodge City, Ks. 67801.
