| Birth: | Jul. 8, 1928 Rattan Pushmataha County Oklahoma, USA | | Death: | Mar. 26, 2007 Turner Marion County Oregon, USA | July 8, 1928 — March 26, 2007
Haskell Hawkins, 78, of Turner passed away peacefully Monday at home surrounded by his loving wife, Verna, and their four children.
He was born in Rattan, Okla., to Ennis and Gladys Hawkins. His father was an evangelist known as the cowboy preacher. Haskell followed his father's footsteps into the ministry.
As a young man, he was the hometown basketball hero. While playing forward for his high school team, they were undefeated on their own court for all four years. He also pursued this sport at Murray State College.
Haskell pastored several churches for the Church of God, Seventh Day in Oklahoma, Missouri and Oregon. He was known not only for his love and dedication for serving the Lord, but also for the country gospel songs he sang while playing his Martin guitar.
Living in the Jefferson community since 1966, he owned the Triple H Construction company, specializing in agricultural buildings. The last 20 years of his life, his body suffered from the effects of Parkinson's disease. Even during this time, his faith in God did not waver nor diminish. His spirit was then and is now safe in the arms of God.
He is survived by wife Verna Hawkins; children Michael Hawkins, Melanie Beattie, Charvae Madsen and Craig Hawkins; 13 grandchildren; and siblings Edith Rhine, MaryLou Braat, Willard Hawkins and Ennis Thurman Hawkins.
Hardworking Haskell was known by his children as a generous, compassionate father, who always displayed unconditional love. Although serious and soft spoken, Haskell was also very fun loving and humorous. Regarded by many as a caring friend, he gave wise counsel with a Christ-like heart.
"The Hawkins family would like to thank all of our friends in the community and church family who have loved Haskell through the years and for your support at this time. We know we have been the most fortunate family to have had Haskell in our lives."
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Marion Church of God, Seventh Day. Private interment will be at Jefferson Cemetery.
North Santiam Funeral Service in Stayton is handling arrangements.
