Donald J. Hatzenbuhler, 63, died May 15, 2011, at his residence in Mandan. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery. Cremation has taken place.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish rosary/vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Donald was born June 29, 1947, in Mandan, to John A. and Ann (Schmidt) Hatzenbuhler. After graduating from Solen High School, he continued his education at Bismarck State College as well as University of Mary. He then worked as an optical assistant in various optical centers in the area. He married LaVonne Fleck in 1969. In September 2004, he married Sandy (Beltz) Volk in Mandan.

Don was known for his love for his family. With such a close bond with his parents, he made special efforts to call them each and every day. He also had a close relationship with his step-granddaughter, Sharrie. Don often spent time outdoors camping and fishing. He also had a love for music, especially old-time music, playing the accordion for many years. His pet dog, Ewok, was always at his side, or on his lap.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, Bismarck; son, Donavon Hatzenbuhler, Bismarck; parents, John and Ann Hatzenbuhler, Mandan; sisters, Evelyn "Evie" Berger, Carlene (Don) Friesz and Karen (Leon) Glasser, all of Mandan; brother, John J. Hatzenbuhler, Mandan; his stepdaughters, Sundi Eckholm and Sherri Heinert, both of Mandan; stepsons, Steven Volk, Elgin, and Scott Volk, Bismarck; 10 step-grandchildren; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as special friend, Ron Jacobson.
