Joseph Hatzenbuhler, 81, a longtime Solen resident and more recently a resident of Edgewood Vista, Bismarck, died April 4, 2011, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, followed by a parish rosary/vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Joseph was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Solen, to Anton and Julia (Scheetz) Hatzenbuhler. On Nov. 21, 1959, he married Florence Haider in Odense.

Joseph had fond memories of the old days, thrashing and harvesting. With his love of the land, farming was his life. He was also skilled in electrical, carpentry and mechanical tasks. He had the unique ability to read a how-to manual on any of the above and could simply proceed in doing what the manual said. He built a replica of the Odense Church, since woodworking was a favorite pastime. He enjoyed a competitive game of whist, pinochle and checkers, which he normally would be the winner. He especially enjoyed his family, the holiday gatherings with good food and games. He was a collector of antiques and coins, in particular, a 1931 Austin which he had restored and driven in a parade. In general, he was a man of strong faith, respectful of others, pleasant and most of all, grateful for his family and a good life.

Left with wonderful memories are two sons, Joe Jr., Solen, and Dwight (Wendy), Beulah; four daughters, Sharon Hatzenbuhler, Bismarck, Sandi Hatzenbuhler (Basil Joseph), Minneapolis, Tammy (Tim) Skaja, Maple Grove, Minn., and Mary (Russ) Brown, Fargo; 11 grandchildren, Cassie and Derek Hatzenbuhler, Channing, Chelsey, Keely and Whitney Hatzenbuhler, Caitlin and Carlee Joseph, Blake and Evan Skaja and Carter Brown; four brothers, John (Ann) Hatzenbuhler, Tony (Helen) Hatzenbuhler, Matt (Ann) Hatzenbuhler and Christ (Hildegard) Hatzenbuhler, all of Mandan; and one sister-in-law, Isabelle Hatzenbuhler, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence, who died in 2008; his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (John) Zueger; brother, Fred; and infant sister.
