From the Alton Evening Telegraph, Saturday, 25 Oct. 1890, page 5, column 3:
"Died.
At Godfrey, last evening, Mrs. Eva Hathaway, daughter of Mr. J. Still, of this city. Mrs. Hathaway had been suffering from neuralgia, the disease attacking the heart last evening, causing instant death. Besides a husband and two children, she leaves a father and two sisters, Mrs. Paddock and Mrs. Albert Still (sic -- Riggs), to mourn her death. The funeral will probably occur Monday."

Bennington (Vermont) Banner of 6 Nov 1890:

THE Brighton, Ill., News of the 29th, Oct.,has an account of the death of Mrs. Benjamin C. Hathaway, which occurred the Sunday previous. The difficulty was pulmonary disease, and Mrs. Hathaway was 31 years old. The funeral services were attended from the Methodist church where a large concourse of sorrowing friends had assembled. The News says: "Eva F. Still was born in Alton, October 5th, 1859. At the age of nine years she removed with her parents to the village of Godfrey, where the days of her youth were spent. On October 5th 1882, she was married to Benj. C. Hathaway, who survives her. Two children were born to them, a little girl and boy, who in their helpless innocence are left to feel the need of a mother's loving care. In August, 1880, she united with the Methodist church of Godfrey, and after her marriage her membership was transferred to the Brighton Methodist church, of which she was a faithful member at the time of her death. During the eight years of her residence in this community Mrs. Hathaway formed a host of loving friends who mourn her untimely death. Hers was a loveable nature, a particularly amiable disposition and a person in whom was ever found a charitable leniency toward the unfortunate. Mr. Hathaway and his little comforters have the tender sympathy of the whole community in this irreparable loss of his loving companion and helpmeet." Mr. Hathaway is a brother of E. P. Hathaway of Bennington, and of the late T. Spencer Hathaway. Another brother, Calvin, died in the army. Mr. Benj. Hathaway visited her some nine years ago.
