Amos Hatcliff was born in Ashlel, Lincolnshire Co., England on November 5, 1866. As an infant he was baptized in the Church of England. At the age of four years he came to America with his parents. After a short residence in Lincoln, the family moved to Crete and at first lived on a farm just south of town. Later the family moved to a farm two miles south and two miles west of Crete, where the deceased grew to manhood.
On March 4, 1894 he was married to Miss Mary Luick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Luick of the Pleasant Hill community. This union was blessed with six children, four sons and two daughters. Of these, one son and one daughter died in infancy. The first years of his married life were spent on the farm now occupied by Joe Papik. Later he moved to the farm now occupied by his son, Clyde, where he remained until he retired from the farm in 1922 and moved to Crete. For 19 years he was a resident of this city, living in the house formerly owned by his parents-in-law.
The deceased was of rugged nature and seldom had an ill day, but late this winter his health began to fail. Three weeks ago his condition grew worse. Last week he was taken to a hospital in Lincoln. There he passed away Saturday morning at 3 o'clock. He reached the age of 74 years, 5 months, and 21 days, being survived by his wife; three sons, Ernest of Duluth, Minnesota; Griffin and Clyde and daughter, Gladys of Crete, and four grandsons.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the Kuncl Funeral Home with Rev. A.F. Schrein in charge. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.
