Sarah was the daughter of Josiah & Narcissa (Walker) Cooper. She married James Edward Hatcher, who was the son of Silas and Permelia Hatcher.

Sarah and James settled on Little Bluestone River in Summers County, West Virginia. They were the parents of eight children:

1. Joseph Hatcher, died at 21 years of age
2. Carrie Hatcher Haney
3. Amanda Hatcher Simmons
4. Louvernia "Lulu" E. Hatcher Cooper
5. Nevada Alice "Vada" Hatcher Lilly
6. Albert Alexander Hatcher
7. Alvis Grover Hatcher
8. Lilly Maude Hatcher, died at a very young age
