Mr. Hataway began his career serving in the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC) in Pollock, Camp One. He was a veteran of WWII and served over 18 years, starting with CO F, 513th Parachute Infantry Division, 101st and 82nd Airborne Division, MSG E-9. He was owner and operator of Reed's Typewriter Exchange, Inc. in Alexandria. He served as a member of Grant Parish Police Jury and was elected Alderman for the Town of Dry Prong. He was instrumental in helping to obtain natural gas and street lights, worked to develop a volunteer fire department, and headed much needed projects for the towns and schools in the Dry Prong community and surrounding Grant Parish. He chaired Bucket Brigade Daze, a fund raiser of Dry Prong Volunteer Fire Department, as well as other community and parish needs. He worked to raise funds to support and promote the Senior Olympics. He was crowned King, Region IV and received a trophy as top seller of the 2003 Olympics Raffle Tickets. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Dry Prong and was a volunteer member of Dry Prong Community Vegetable Garden for the needy and senior citizens. He was a lifetime member of Anchor Masonic Lodge #261, Pollock and a member of Woodmen of the World.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Wesley Hataway and Edith Simmons Hataway; one sister, Lorraine; and two brothers, Melvin and L. C. Hataway.
He was survived by his wife of 59 years, Artie Simmons Hataway of Dry Prong; one son, Michael Joseph Hataway and wife Rosyln of Dry Prong; one daughter, Donna Suzanne Morrison and husband W. R. "Bill" of Dry Prong; two brothers, Alton Hataway and wife Dorothy, Leonard Ray "Pop" Hataway and wife Sharon, both of Dry Prong; four sisters, Jewel Hataway Floyd and husband Clarence of Dry Prong, Laura Hataway Gardner and husband Bud of Mt. Airy, NC, Pauline Hataway Futrell and husband L. G. of Dry Prong, and Iva Jean Hataway Defresco and husband Carmen of Dry Prong; 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren.
