ACTON, BETTY MARGARET HASTY, died January 10, 2009 at home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 26, 1918, the daughter of Curtis Bush Hasty and Haywood Molton Hasty. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, George Herbert Acton and her son, George Herbert Acton, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Betsy Acton Dumas and her husband, Lawrence Dumas III; three grandchildren, William Lawrence Dumas IV, George Acton Dumas and his wife, Susan, Margaret Dumas Bond and her husband, Christopher; two great-grandchildren, George Acton Dumas, Jr. and Claude Augustus Dumas; a brother, Curtis Bush Hasty, Jr. and his wife, Lucia; a sister-in-law, Inez Acton Jackson; four nieces and a nephew. Mrs. Acton graduated from Ramsay High School and Birmingham Southern College with a degree in French and English. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend who filled the lives of her family and many friends with love and joy. During her life she was involved in numerous civic and social organizations, but her great love was teaching. She taught kindergarten and Sunday School for many years and founded the kindergarten program at Mountain Brook Baptist Church where she served as the director for 25 years. Betty was a lady of strong faith. She was a loyal and active member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church for 60 years. The burial will be private for the family at Elmwood Cemetery.
