GERTRUDE HASSENFELD, 87, of 144 Elmgrove Ave., a founder of the Providence Hebrew Day School, died yesterday at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston. She was the widow of Jack Hassenfeld.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Isaac and Leah (Laufer) Feit, she had lived in Providence for more than 60 years.

Mrs. Hassenfeld, with her late husband, was one of the founders of the Providence Hebrew Day School. An active volunteer for the Jewish Home for the Aged, she was also a member of the board of directors of its Ladies Association. She was a member of Congregation Shaare Zedek-Sons of Abraham. For many years she had been a bookkeeper and legal secretary.

She leaves three sons, a sister, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was sister of the late Jack Feit, Sam Feit and Max Feit.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Chapel, 825 Hope St. Burial will be in Lincoln Park Cemetery, Warwick.
