WEST GARDINER - Mary Garceau, 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at home with her family by her side. She was born in Lowell, Mass., on May 25, 1937, a daughter of Henry and Dorothy (Verge) Haskell. In her youth the family relocated to Richmond Street in East Taunton, Mass. Mary (Mom) often spoke of those days with such fondness. In 1954 she married Louis Garceau, and together they raised six daughters until his passing in 1983.
In 1994 Mary retired to Maine to live with her daughter Terry. She loved to travel. Her favorite destinations were Georgia and Pennsylvania. Her daughter Laurie and grandson Louis would accompany her to one of her favorites every year. Another thing that brought her pleasure was going to the antique car shows. She had a standing date with her son-in-law Rick at Ainslie's market. She would reminisce about cars she grew up with and the ones she wished she could have had and, most importantly, have her once-a-week hot dog. Although the last three years of life were very difficult healthwise for Mom, she never lost her innate sense of humor. Her devilish grin that would come across her face when she knew she made a funny was "priceless" and a trait that I hope we will inherit.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Dorothy Haskell, her husband, Louis Garceau, daughter Patricia Garceau and her brother, Fredrick Haskell.
She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Garceau of Crowns Point, Ind., Mary Garceau of Taunton, Terry Weston of West Gardiner, Laurie Garceau of Taunton, and Laurette Marshall of Taunton; two sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Keene and Henrietta DeCosta; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Burial will take place later in the spring in the Cherry Hill Cemetery, West Gardiner. (Kennebec Journal 2/19/2013)
