VETERAN
WORLD WAR II

Afton R Haskell, age 88 of Payson, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, October 1, 2012, after a long, happy life. He was born Sept. 3, 1924 to LeRoy and Charlotta Carter Haskell, the 7th of 9 children. He was born, grew up and lived his entire life in the valley East of Payson, affectionately known as Haskellville. He graduated from Payson High School and LDS Seminary. He served in the infantry in the Pacific during WWII, receiving recognition medals including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. He married Mary Lou Shaw on August 14, 1945 in the Manti Temple. They were married 61 years before she passed away in 2006.

Afton was a letter carrier for Payson City for almost 29 years, retiring in 1982. He has always loved farming and will be remembered for the many vegetables he grew and sold to people throughout the state. He was an active member of the LDS church, serving as elder's quorum president, MIA president, councilor in a bishopric and on a high council.

He enjoyed hunting anything, fishing anywhere, and bowling anytime. He loved to work and stay busy and was most happy with his family.

Afton and Mary Lou are the parents of 4 daughters: Linda Coray (Lynn), Spanish Fork, Utah; Patricia Ann (deceased) Mark Downing, Washington, Utah; Karen (Jerry) Fraughton, Parowan, Utah; Shawna (David) Wagaman, Highland, Utah; and a son, Chet (deceased). They are the proud grandparents of 10, and the great-grandparents of 16.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 6, 2012, 12:30 p.m. at the Walker Mortuary, 587 South 100 West, Payson, where friends may call Friday, 6-8:00 p.m. or Saturday, 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Burial will be in the Payson City Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by the V.F.W.
