Helen M. Harvey Baumer was born in the beautiful Quaker city of Richmond, Indiana. She attended the elementary schools, the Garfield Junior High School and graduated from the Richmond High School. She attended Akron Municipal University, Akron, Ohio;Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City; Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio; and received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.
On July 27. 1925, she became the wife of Bernard J. Baumer in the St.Andrew's Catholic Church of Richmond, Indiana. She and her husband came to Anderson, Indiana August 1, 1927. They became the parents of Myron F., R. Philip and Rosalie Baumer Truman. (Mrs. Truman is a non-resident of the Kikthawenund Chapter, DAR of Anderson, Indiana.)
Helen taught in a one-room school at Fourth-of-July Creek in the foot hills of the Bitterroot Mountains near Salmon, Idaho. She also taught at Norton Center Elementary School, Barberton, Ohio; Ingalls Elementary at Ingalls, Indiana; Edgewood Elementary School; was acting principal for the Linwood School, Linwood; Madison Heights Junior High School; retiring in 1969, completing 26 years of service. .
During her teaching career, she was active in many educational and professional organizations on national, state and local levels. In 1967 she was appointed program chairman of the Values Committee for the East Central Conference held in Muncie, Indiana.
Since her retirement she has been engaged in many civic activities.
She was president of the Madison County Historical Society, Inc. for four years; appointed by the Madison County Council of Government to be president and coordinator of the Madison County American Revolution Bicentennial Commission; was later director of the Anderson American Revolution Bicentennial office in Anderson and was elected president of the Madison County Retired Teachers Association. She founded and organized THE FRIENDS of THE LIBRARY for the Anderson Public Library.
In recent years, she has confined her membership to the Society of
Indiana Pioneers; Indiana Historical Society; Madison County Historical Society, Inc.;National Retired Teachers Association; Indiana Retired Teachers Association; Madison County Retired Teachers Association; American Association for Retired Persons; The Indiana Religious History Association; Ball State Alumni Association; National Society, Daughters of the Americ-
an Revolution, Kikthawenund Chapter; National Society, Daughters of the American Colonists, Indianapolis Chapter; National Society, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, Edward Pearson Chapter; charter member, Conner Prairie Settlement in Noblesville and Friends of the Library.
She has been active in her church; promoter of the Rosary Society;attends daily Mass at St. John's Chapel in St. John’s Health Center; is a daily communicate; is a professed oblate of the Benedictines of St. Meinrad Arch abbey, St. Meinrad, Indiana and member of the Daughters of Isabella, Travers Circle #226, Anderson.
She has received many awards and citations for her services. The
Mounds Kiwanis Club awarded her for her services to her community and was honored at their luncheon. Mayor Rock, at the close of the American Revolution Bicentennial presented the CHIEF ANDERSON plaque,made from the wood of the old court house, at a luncheon.
Nancy Brown, editor of the Madison County Monthy magazine, wrote an interesting article titled THE BLONDE BAUMER honoring Helen.
The Madison County Historical Society, Inc. sponsored an AWARDS banquet at Best Western Sterling House honoring her for the many years of service to the society. At this banquet, Mr. Russell B. Johnson awarded her with a black walnut plaque for her service to Madison county. Mrs. Esther Dittlinger presented a citation in the form of a poem she had composed specially for the occasion. .
She has compiled and published the BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY of MADISON
COUNTY, INDIANA. She created the emblem for the cover of the book.
She has toured 46 states in the United States and made 4 tours of
Europe, one to the British Island and one tour to the Holy Lands.
