W. T. Harvey, Senior Member of the W. T, Harvey Lumber Company, Passes Away Monday after Illness of Long Duration.

Columbus lost another of her valuable citizens when Mr. William Thomas Harvey died Monday at 11 o'clock at the family residence at 1247 Fifth Avenue. Mr. Harvey was the senior member of the firm of the W. T. Harvey Lumber company, and had been in failing health for the past two years. He was one of the most highly esteemed men of the city and his loss will be keenly felt by the entire community. He was born in Talbot county, Georgia, November 15, 1842, and was a son of the late John B. and Mary Harvey. He was an infant when his mother died and but five years of age when his father died. He was thus early orphaned and was reared by his uncle, Mr. Edward Hamilton Harvey of Talbotton, where he was afforded the advantage of an excellent private school, thus securing a common school education. In the spring of 1861, when only 18 years of age, he enlisted as a private in company A, fourth Georgia infantry, Talbot county. After serving two years, he was honorably discharged on account of physical disability. Upon recuperating his energies he obtained a detail from the confederate government and during the remainder of the confederate war was engaged in sawing lumber fo railway repair and construction work. His experience in this line, no douby led to his adopting the lumber business as a life vocation. On March 4, 1864, he was married to Miss Lauretta Thomas Downs, of Taylor county, Ga., who preceded him to the grave about five years ago. He moved to Columbus in 1887 and engaged in the lumber business with Mr. Samples and lager with Mr. William Martin. While in partnership with the latter their plant was entirely destroyed by fire. Following which his son Wm. H. Harvey, became a partner with him and they gradually built up one of the largest incorporated lumber companies of our city, known as the Harvey Lumber company. Mr. Harvey was a consistent member of St. Luke Methodist church and was one of the best citizens of Columbus. He was also a member of Mt. Hermon lodge of Marona and of Muscogee lodge No. 5, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In all of the relations of life he was ever faithful to duty and was of a genial and kindly disposition. He had a host of friends throughout this section who will learn of his death with sincere regret. Mr. Harvey is survived by one son, Mr. W. H. Harvey, and by two daughters, Mrs. John L. Slaughter and Mrs. Dr. J. T. Lightner, of this city, and a number of grandchildren including Eugene L. Harvey, U. S. A., and W. T. Harvey, Jr. of Columbus, who have the sympathy of their many friends in ther sad bereavement. The funeral will take place from the residence at 5:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and the interment will be in Linwood cemetery. Rev. J. A. Thomas, pastor of St. Luke Methodist church, will conduct the funeral services. The Masons and Odd Fellows will take part in the funeral services.
