Elaine Hartmann, a resident of Grosse Pointe Farms for the last 48 years, entered eternal life in her home on April 30, 2008. She was 78 years old. She had battled ovarian cancer for the past five years.

Elaine was born in Detroit on January 11, 1930. She graduated from Redford High School in 1948, and received a bachelor's degree in education from Wayne State University in 1952. She was a Detroit school teacher for 34 years, retiring in 1986.

After retiring, Elaine pursued a master's degree in design. She was an avid collector of folk art and antiques, and turned this love into a business when she opened Birds of a Feather Antiques in Grosse Pointe Park in the 1990s.

Elaine was active in state and local politics. She nearly made a successful bid for state representative in 1996.

Elaine championed many causes for the benefit of her community. She was a tireless advocate of historical preservation and an active member of the Grosse Pointe Historical Society. For years she served on the Grosse Pointe Farms Planning Commission. She rescued and beautifully restored one of the oldest homes in the Grosse Pointes, the 19th-century Cadieux Farmhouse.

At her home, Elaine maintained a garden with roses, flowering trees, herbs, tomatoes, and squash. Her garden was the topic of several newspaper and magazine articles and was one of the regular stops on a tour of gardens in the Grosse Pointes. Each spring, she was a familiar figure at Detroit's Eastern Market as she planned and gathered plants for her annual gardens. Her daughter said she was a phenomenal cook and loved to cook for her family from her garden.

As a labor of love, Elaine dedicated her talents to renovating and decorating the rectory at Most Holy Trinity Church in Detroit. In recognition of her contributions, she received the Holy Trinity Good Samaritan Award.

She will be missed by her loving family, including her two brothers, Robert Gell and Lester Gell; identical twin sister, Barbara Bullard; her daughter, Amy; son-in-law, Chick Taylor; grandson, Charlie; her faithful dog, Hershey; and her beloved garden.

Elaine was predeceased by her husband Joseph N. Hartmann, a former Detroit News reporter, in 2003. They were married in 1956.

A private memorial service will be held on May 17, 2008 at 10:00 AM.

Donations can be made to the Joseph Hartmann Scholarship, Trinity Educational Fund, Holy Trinity School, 1050 Porter, Detroit, MI 48226.
