Prior to that time he had been in good health and was not known to have had heart trouble previously. His condition gradually became worse until his death. Surviving are the wife, Bertha E.; two daughters, Mrs. Holly Harvey, of Muncie, and Mrs. Eugene Nutting of Niagara Falls, N. Y.; five sons, Fred and Ross Hartley, of Muncie; Roy Hartley of Peoria, Ill., and Joseph and Philip Hartley of Indianapolis; a sister Mrs. John Sollars, and a brother, Thomas Hartley, both of Delaware County. The son of Benjamin Hartley and Harriett Gough Hartley, Harley was born September 18, 1869, on a farm five miles northwest of Muncie, near Mt. Olive Chapel. He attended a rural elementary school and was graduated from Muncie High School. As a young man he moved to Oakville, opening a general merchandise store and elevator. It was there in January, 1890, he married Bertha Johnson. In 1901 Mr. Hartley came to Muncie, and with J. Ross Crozier started the Eagle Foundry. He later bought out Mr. Crozier's interests and for a number of years Mr. Hartley's son-in-law, Holly Harvey, was associated with him in the business. At the time of his death his son, J. Ross Hartley, was connected with him in the business. Mr. Hartley was also one of the founders of the Indiana Foundry Corporation in 1921. Mr. Hartley served as city councilman during the Bunch administration and at the time of his death was a jury commissioner of superior court. He was a member of the Jackson Street Christian Church and the Elks Lodge. The house in which he died had been Mr. Hartley's home for the last 23 years.

Note: Harley D. Hartley and Bertha E. Johnson were married Jan. 26, 1890, Delaware County, IN.
