Nellie Hartley was the wife of Steven Willard (Steve) Hartley. She and Steve were very good friends of my parents J. B. and Allene Rose. Her husband worked at the Redstone Arsenal with my Father in the late fifties and sixties. Nellie was a very good Mother to her four children and a great companion to her husband. She loved life, was always upbeat even at times when she had every reason not to be. I met her and Steve when I was about 13 years old and always enjoyed going to her home with my parents. She was a complete homemaker at that time and a very good cook. Years later she would become a working lady, owning a wig botique and then selling advertisement for a small newspaper. Fate would not favor Nellie. Along the way she would lose one of her daughters, Debbie to a carwreck. She would see one of her sons, Danny become paralized from the waist down in a motorcycle accident. Finally she would lose Steve to a heart attack when he was just 52 years of age. Health problems would begin to mount and a person with lesser strength than she would probably have given up, but when I would see her on occasions when I happen to be going her way, she always had a smile on her face and a kind word to others. She is gone now but I will always remember that pretty lady from T-Town with the big personality and ready smile.
