|Birth: ||Feb. 16, 1825|
|Death: ||Apr. 25, 1862|
Charles R. and Lorenda Hart, 35 and 31 years of age, respectively, resided in Edinburg Twp., Portage County, Ohio, according to the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census listings. By 1850 they had two children, Emeline, born in 1848, and Charles A., born in 1849, both in Ohio. In 1860 two daughters were listed, Mary L., born in 1856, and Anna, born in 1859. Charles, a farmer, enlisted for Civil War army service in Company F, 42nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, November 26, 1861 as a private soldier. The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers shows that he was 26 years old at the time he entered the army but that appears to be an error and should have read 36. His record shows that he died of disease at his home in Edinburg and died there April 25, 1862. He may have been sent home on medical leave to from his regiment to recover and then report back to be declared fit for duty. Only a look at the military and pension papers from the National Archives will have credible documentation on what the circumstances were leading up to his death.
Lorenda applied to a widow's pension based on Charles's army service on June 8, 1863. The pension was granted as Certificate #8838. Although the inscription on the cemetery monument shows that Charles was a "Capt.", he was not. He was a private.
The 1870 U.S. Census shows Lorinda, 40, and children Mary, 14, Anna, 11, and Charles 9(This could not have been the Charles A. Hart born in 1859.) living in Edinburg. In the 1880 U.S. Census, Lorinda is shown a widow, 47, keeping house, living in Vienna in Trumbull County Ohio with her son-in-law, Jackson Walker, 27, working in a telegraph office, born in Pennsylvania, her daughter, Mary Walker, 21, erroneously shown born in Michigan, and her granddaughter, Emma Walker, 4, born in Ohio. Lorenda presumably died in Trumble County in 1880.
Also buried with Charles R. and Lorenda Hart are son, Charles R. Hart(Aug. 29, 1861-Aug. 17, 1887), and daughter Emeline(Dec. 7, 1847-Dec. 7, 1856).
