Born in Madison Co. Ind. son of William (son of Robert and Louisanna Stewart Benefiel) & Cynthia Kidwell (dau of Rev. Jonathan Kidwell & Rebecca Moore), brother of James M. Benefiel, Robert Stewart Benefiel, Jonathan D. Benefiel, Rebecca Ann Benefiel, Levi Benefiel, Leander J. Benefiel, Isham Benefiel, and Lurana J. Benefiel.

Married Oct 6, 1866 Jane H. Epperly and father of Joel Benton Benefiel.

"On June 12, 1861 enlisted for 3 yrs, Corporal; promoted to Sgt, June 1, 1862; in Co. G, Rgt 17 Ind. Inf; discharged June 20, 1864 Columbia, Tenn"

"In the spring of 1887, the family moved to a 200 acre farm near Florida Station, Lafayette twp, Madison Co. Ind, but due to poor health from exposure in the Army and hard work on the farm, he was forced to abandon farming and accept an appointment in the U.S. Indian Service as Agency Farmer at Omaha and Winnebago Agency, Neb., giving him jurisdiction over the farming business on the reservation. He served from Aug 1889 to Apr 1893, Jennie ran the weather station."

"He moved to Harriman, Tn with his brother Isham engaging in real estate business, then moved to Pendleton, Madison Co. Ind. where in 1894 the Republicans of Fall Creek twp elected him to Justice of the Peace which he served 4 yrs."

In 1898 returned to the US Indian Service for eleven years, resingning and moving back to Pendleton, Ind, again serving as Justice of the Peace another term.

He and Jennie adhired to the beliefs of the Universalist doctine as taught by his grandfather, Rev. Jonathan Kidwell
--That we are all children of one Creator; God the Father of all; and that our Holy Father could not be so unmerciful as to doom a portion of his offspring to everylasting torment (as has been taught by other church denominations)--was accepted.
