ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON OCTOBER 21, 1942 AT FORT CUSTER, MICHIGAN. COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING AND QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF COOK'S HELPER (590). DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON JULY 23, 1944 BOUND FOR THE PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS. PARTICIPATED BRIEFLY IN THE NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN WITH HIS ORIGINAL UNIT AND LATER RE-ASSIGNED TO COMPANY G, 383RD INFANTRY REGIMENT, 96TH 'DEADEYE' INFANTRY DIVISION WHICH TRAINED IN HAWAII BEFORE ENTERING COMBAT BETWEEN TANAUAN AND DULAG IN LEYTE GULF, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS ON OCTOBER 20, 1944. CONTINUED FIGHTING THROUGH THE SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES AND RYUKYUS CAMPAIGNS, LANDING ON OKINAWA ON APRIL 1, 1945. EARNED THE PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION (AWARDED RETROACTIVELY), COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 1 BRONZE ARROWHEAD (ASSAULT LANDING) AND 3 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, WWII VICTORY MEDAL AND THE PHILIPPINE LIBERATION MEDAL WITH 2 BRONZE BATTLE STARS. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A PRIVATE FIRST CLASS ON DECEMBER 20, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, CAMP GRANT, ILLINOIS.

George E. Harrison, 85, of Clay City, died at 7:3U p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his home.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Neal Funeral Home in Louisville. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today at the funeral home. Burial with military rites was in Hoosier Cemetery in Louisville.

Mr. Harrison was born on October 31, 1917, in Clay City, the son of Eliza B. and
Lola (Edwards) Harrison. He married Inez Britton on December 31, 1941, in Clay City.
She survives.

He was a retired oil-field pumper for W.C. McBride Company. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Clay City Veterans of Foreign Wars and Clay City United
Methodist Church.

Mr. Harrison is survived by his wife, Inez Harrison, of Clay City; four sons, George E. Harrison and his wife, Sue, of Palestine, Larry D. Harrison and friend, June Conrad, of
Elizabethtown, David Harrison, of .Louisville, and Jay Dee Harrison and his wife: Mitzie, of Newton; a daughter. Pasty June Harrison, of Clay City; a sister, Lucille Noblet, of Flora;
and 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and five sisters.

Memorials may be made to Clay City United Methodist Church.
