Wife of John Wallace Atchison
Mother of Pearl and Jesse Harris Atchison also buried in this cemetery. It is likely that she died as the result of childbirth of Jesse Harris Atchison.
No obituary found for Melissa but did find one for her husband who died in California and is probably buried in California.
April 2, 1936--Kirwin Kansan
John Wallace Atchison was born in Brookville, Jefferson county, Pennsylvania, December 13, 1852, and departed this life at his home in Los Angeles, California, March 21, 1936, at the age of 83 years, three months and eight days. At the age of six he, with his father's family, moved to Freeport, Illinois, where he grew to young manhood. About 1878 he came to Phillips county, Kansas, where he pioneered; married Melissa Harris, December 13, 1881, and suffered her loss September 12, 1885. Soon he moved to Glen Elder, Kansas, where he established a farm and united in marriage to Amanda, Harris, July 15, 1887. To this union five children were born, three boys and two girls, all living.
When about 10 years of age he heard Joseph Travis preach in Freeport, Illinois, and referred to it as the decision date of his life. He subscribed for the Free Methodist paper continuously since he joined its church in 1887 under the pastorate of L. D. Penbelton, E. E. Miller, Elder. He had charge of the building of four churches and tithed deeply for the support of all church needs.
He said that he wished to live so that when he died, people would say he lived higher than he professed. He leaves to appreciate that effort a devoted wife, five children:
Perry Atchison of Los Angeles
Austin Atchison of Kansas City, Missouri
Flossie Harris of Los Angeles
Esther Breckinridge of Woodston, Kansas
Floyd Atchison of Los Angeles
1 great grandchild and a host of friends and relatives from coast to coast.
In 1925 he went to California to retire and though suffering some affliction, was beautifully patient and fully conscious up to the last hour. To know him was to love him because of his unselfish disposition and his active service in his community, in his home, and in his church.
Mr. Atchison was a brother of Al, Harve, and Mrs. Emma VanAllen of this place and also of J. C. Atchison of Agra. He has many nephews and nieces living here.
Note: J. W. Atchison's second wife was the sister of his first wife.
