George E. Harris, 81, of Brockton died Monday, March 1, 2010, at Good Samaritan Medical Center, Brockton, after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Joyce Antunes Barboza Harris. Born Feb. 19, 1929, in New York, he was a son of the late George W. and Helen (Fredricks) Harris. Raised and educated in Brockton, George was a graduate of Brockton High School, Class of 1948, and the Franklin Institute, Class of 1951. He also attended Northeastern University, Ford Motor Institute and General Motors Institute. George was employed by Paul Clark Ford, Muzi Ford, Norwell Motors, All Stainless of Hingham, Silver City Subaru, Silko Honda and Weir Auto. When employed by Ford and GM Buick, he was the district manager for New England for parts and services. George also was a branch manager for O.I.C. Boston where he trained, counseled and placed inner city underemployed and disadvantaged minorities in auto repair. He was self-employed at Pembroke Motors and Federal Auto Parts. He retired from the Massachusetts Lottery Commission as a technician. George was a huge Red Sox and Patriots fan. Before he got sick, George liked working on cars and dancing. He also enjoyed horses, golf, mechanics and carpentry. He is survived by his wife Joyce; his children, George Harris Jr. of Plympton, Dr. Deborah Harris of Newport, R.I., Melissa Clark and her husband Greg of Bow, N.H., Noel Harris of Sarasota, Fla.; his stepchildren, Michael P. Antunes of New Bedford, Juanita Antunes of California, Juan Pedro Antunes of Brockton, Dina Antunes Scruggs of Texas, Wendi L. Antunes of Brockton; his five grandchildren; and 13 step-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St. (Rte. 123), Brockton, Saturday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Michael Walker will officiate.
