Billie Marie Harper French | Visit Guest Book

A Mass of Christian Burial for Billie Marie Harper French will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010, in St. Rita Catholic Church with Rev. Martin Laird officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Ball under the direction of John Kramer & Son.
Relatives, friends, and former students are invited to attend the visitation at John Kramer & Son in Alexandria, Friday, September 3, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home. A recitation of the holy rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Billie Marie Harper French, age 83, died September 1, 2010 at Rapides Regional Medical Center. She was born on April 23, 1927 in Cheneyville. She was the daughter of Willie "Bill" Harper of Cheneyville and Eunice Fisher Harper of Evergreen both of whom preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by her only sibling Marion App Harper of Cheneyville.
Billie Marie Harper French was married to Harry Eugene French, Sr. for 59 years until his death in 2005.
She is survived by her three children, Harry Eugene "Gene" French, Jr. of Costa Rica, Bill Franklin French (spouse Mala Nutt French) of Loyd Bridge, and Marion A. "Googy" French (spouse Lucinda Hoyt French) of Alexandria.
She is also survived by Jerry Wayne Floyd (spouse Nyla M. Floyd) of Lecompte, Therese Daspit Duval (spouse David L. Duval) of Loranger, and Robert Valentine "Bobby" Daspit, III, (spouse Terri W. Daspit) of Ithaca, New York, children she reared and for whom she had much love.
Ms. French had eleven grandchildren, namely Rose Marie French, Nashville, Tennessee; Bill Franklin French, Lafayette; Laura Ann French Auwarter, Dallas, Texas; Emily Theresa French, Lecompte; Amanda Renee French, Orlando, Florida; Matthew Clayton French, Alexandria; Rebecca Lynn French, Baton Rouge; Samuel Thomas French, Alexandria; Justin Paul French, Pineville; Jerry Brown French and Cody Smith French of Costa Rica; and one great grandchild, William Bradley Schrade, Nashville, Tennesse.
She was preceded in death by her oldest grandchild Harry E. "Freddie" French, III.
She also had three very close friends, Sonny and Jeanette Dyer of Cheneyville, and Imogene Wilmore of Lecompte.
Ms. French was a retired teacher/principal of the Rapides Parish School Board having worked for some 34.5 years. She was a principal at St. Anthony of Padua School in Bunkie for 13 years. Her educational career spanned seven decades from 1945 to 2002.
Ms. French graduated from Cheneyville High School in 1943. She attended both Northwestern State College and Louisiana College graduating from L.C. in 1948 in elementary education. She began her teaching career in September of 1945 at age 18 before she received her degree. Because of the war, there was a teaching shortage and many noncertified teachers had to teach. Ms. French taught at Poland High School (one particular year with 53 students in her class), Tioga High School, Forest Hill High School, Lecompte High School, and Lincoln Williams School in Cheneyville. She continued her education and received her Masters and plus 30 from LSU. She became principal at Lecompte Primary School and Carter C. Raymond. After retiring from the Rapides Parish School Board, she was appointed principal at St. Anthony of Padua School in Bunkie. She was the first lay principal at that school.
Pallbearers will be Justin French, Sam French, Clayton French, Bill French, Will Hall and John J. Duval.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to St. Anthony of Padua School, 116 S. Knoll Ave. Bunkie, LA 71322. The phone number for St. Anthony School is 318-346-2739.
