Teresa (as everyone called her) was the 12th of 13 children born to Johnny Jackson Harper and Sarah Emily (Baker) Harper of Sheridan, AR. She grew up in a small community and graduated from Prattsville High School. In 1950, she married Cecil Ray McCool in Sheridan and they headed to the Pacific Northwest.
After living and working in Washington and Oregon for several years, they moved back to Arkansas. Teresa was versatile in the work force, having worked as a seamstress in a garment factory, a cook at the local school, domestics clerk at J.C. Penney, cashier for Payless Drug Store and later at JoAnn Fabrics. An accomplished seamstress, she made clothes for family and friends, and was hired to sew garments or make alterations. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting and reading.
When daughter Bonnie introduced her to a Kindle, she not only read books, but enjoyed playing some video games. She was an excellent cook and loved to invite people to share a meal in her home.
In 1989, when her husband retired, they moved to Winston, and remained there until her husband’s death in 2009. At that time Teresa moved to a retirement community in Medford; then relocated to an assisted living facility in North Bend in January 2014, to be near her daughter, Linda.
Most of her life Teresa was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. She played the piano and loved to sing, singing alto for the family quartet when her daughters were young. At the time of her death she was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Coquille.
She is survived by daughter, Linda Gale Chandler and her husband Mike of Coquille; daughter, Bonnie Jean Anderson and her husband Steve of Kelso, WA; granddaughters, Rebecca Anderson of Kelso, WA, and Melody Spiegel and her husband Adam of Medford; great-grandson, Colby Whitehouse of Hawaii; and numerous nieces and nephews. Teresa was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil; and all of her brothers and sisters.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2015, at Taylor’s Family Mortuary in Winston, with graveside services to follow at Civil Bend Pioneer Cemetery.
