Hazel Fern Gallagher

BAXTER SPRINGS, KS Hazel Fern Gallagher, 94, passed away Wednesday morning, May 4, 2011, at her home in Baxter Springs, Kan., after a lengthy illness, with her family at her side.

Hazel was born on Oct. 20, 1916, in Bliss, Okla., to the union of Andrew Lee Harney and Lena Hoffman Harney.

She graduated from Ponca City, Okla., High School. She attended cosmetology school and had a beauty shop with her sister Vona in Ponca City.

She was united in marriage to her loving husband and best friend Howard Clarke Gallagher in Blackwell on Feb. 5, 1938. He preceded her in death in 1993.

In 1943, they moved to Baxter Springs, Kan., where Clarke went to work for the Spencer Chemical Company.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Baxter Springs and a member of the Blackwell, Okla., Order of the Eastern Star.

Hazel was a homemaker and also worked for the J.C. Penney in Baxter Springs for over 20 years. Many people remember her working in the fabric department, where she was always willing to help them figure how much fabric was needed for their projects. It was a labor of love for her to help her customers.

She was a very creative lady with many talents. She was a dressmaker, a crafter and a wonderful painter.

Hazel and Clarke both enjoyed being very involved with their daughter and grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Sue Pendleton and husband Mike; her granddaughter, Carmen LeAnn Pyle and Randy, of Baxter Springs; grandson, Clarke Gallagher Pyle and wife Margie, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and great-granddaughter, Ashley Brooke Coach and Mark; great-grandchildren, Brooklynn Coach, Brandon Coach and Christopher (Scooter) Hawes, all of Baxter Springs. Many special nieces and nephews survive.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; all of her brothers, Herbert, Carl, Frank, Lee and Jim Harny; and sisters, Iona Johnson and Madge Henson.

Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Baxter Springs at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 7, with Rev. Lowell Van Tassel.

Burial will be in the Baxter Springs Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday evening, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Hazel to the First United Presbyterian Church.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Arrangements are under the direction of Abbott Funeral Home, Baxter Springs.
