Bonnie J. Harmon
Mother Bonnie Jean Harmon was born on May 14, 1926 to the Late Chapel & Mattie Graham Sandifer. Mother Harmon was united in marriage to Mr. Jim Harmon on March 7, 1946. At an early age, she joined with St. John M.B. Church in McAdams MS. She received her formal education in the public schools of Kosciusko and Jacob Chapel School. She furthered her education by taking courses at Saint Jr. College, Tougaloo College, Rust College and Mississippi State University.
Mother Harmon was a member of the NAACP. She was an active community leader & participated in the boycotting of Fred's Dollar Store in Kosciusko and Durant. She worked the polling booths at McAdams and strongly supported and advocated the need for registering to vote. Her commitment to civil rights lead her to spearheading and successfully procuring water rights for her rural areas of the county.
Mother Harmon taught Head Start School for Central MS. Inc at Christian Liberty and Barlow Head Start centers for 30 years. Mother Harmon always put God first and strongly believed that education was the key to success, whether it was formal or informal. One of her favorite mottos was; "Be the job great or small, do it well or not at all." She always taught the golden rule: "Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you, and always put God first in whatever you do."
Mother Harmon served faithfully on the Hospitality Committee, Mother's Board, Missionary Board, Choir, and taught Sunday School. In 2010, she was chosen "Mother of the Year".
Mother Harmon was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Jim R. Harmon. To this union twelve children were conceived; one daughter Mildred Harmon preceded her in death and one son.
Mother Harmon's spirit left her and went back to God on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 7:28 a.m. at St. Dominic's Hospital surrounded by her family.
Mother Harmon leaves to cherish her memories seven daughters: Mrs. Daisy J. Allen (Johnnie) of Bellwood, IL, Mrs. Ollie Clara Smith (Thomas) Oak Park, IL, Mrs. Mary Burnside (Curtis) Chicago, IL, Mrs. Brenda Teague Harmon (Andria) Sallis, MS, Mrs. Sharon Woods of Jackson, MS, Mrs. Janice Howard (Henry) of Bellwood, IL and Mrs. Vickie Randle (Charles) of Olive Branch, MS; four sons: Mr. Jimmy Harmon (Betty) of Thomastown, MS, Mr. Charles Harmon of Sallis, MS, Mr. Larry Wade Harmon (Jackie) of Oak Park, IL, and Mr. Willie D. Ellis(Geneva)Milwaukee, WI. Two special nephews that she reared as her sons, Mr. Ozzie Sandifer (Claudia) of Chicago, IL and Mr. Fred Douglas Sandifer of Sallis, MS; She also leaves two brothers; Mr. Willie Roy Sandifer (Dorothy) of Kosciusko MS and Mr. R.K. Herron of Chicago, IL. Four brothers preceded her death: James Sandifer, Frankilin Herron, Mack Willie Herron and Ozzie Herron. Seven sisters; Mrs. Effie Mae Herron of Chicago, IL, five sisters who preceded her in death Mrs. Edna Bell McKinney, Mrs. Bernice Kern, Mrs. Mary Alice Caccitorie and Eva Sandifer, Ritha Herron She leaves twenty-six grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
