Raised in Sangerville, Piscataquis County, Maine, Verna moved with her family to California in 1906. She homesteaded in the Mojave Desert from 1911 to 1920.
For many years thereafter, she was a resident of Orange County, where she raised her family. She also spent much of her time helping own and operate Moon Camp in Fawnskin, on Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino County. She was an active and longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Verna married Harry on 24 December 1913. They were parents to Margery (1917), Harry Lee, Jr. (1918), Elizabeth "Betty" (1919-2006), John William "Bill" (1921-1993), Robert Harlow (1923), James Dexter (1924-present), and Mary Ann (1927-2004).
