Maren Eccles Hardy, 93, passed away January 7, 2013, in Provo, Utah. Born August 18, 1919, the eldest child of Royal and Cleone Rich Eccles was raised in Ogden, then lived in Salt Lake City for 11 years, and in Washington, DC for 61 years.
Maren was a gifted pianist and a soloist with the University of Utah Symphony Orchestra. At one of her concerts, she met Ralph Williams Hardy, who was Master of Ceremonies. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1939 and had 5 children: Ralph Williams Hardy Jr. (Carole Rawson), Clare (Jonathan E. Johnson II), Alison (Craig A. Decker), Maren (Forrest B. Hale), and David Eccles Hardy (Jane Taylor).
At age 37, and with five young children, Maren was widowed and subsequently pursued a 36-year career with the U.S. Senate, the Architect of the Capitol, and the FDIC. Always a refined and elegant lady, she was exemplary in her courage, self-reliance, optimism and faith. Maren was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Maren is survived by 3 children, 41 grandchildren, 101 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and siblings Myrelle Eccles Thomas and Justin Rich Eccles. She was preceded in death by daughters Clare and Alison, and siblings Edward Rich Eccles, Cleone Eccles Yeates, and Claire Eccles Adams.
Interment was at the Ogden City Cemetery on January 14. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, in the chapel of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, 15 East South Temple Street, Salt Lake City. Family and friends will be greeted prior to the service from 1:30-2:45 p.m. The family requests no flowers.
