Thelma Hardesty Goodpasture, of Ferrum, died on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, the Rev. M.G. Goodpasture Jr.
She is survived by her children, H. Glenn Goodpasture, Margaret Carol Goodpasture, Samuel H. Goodpasture, Mark D. Goodpasture, Mary Kathleen Powell and the Rev. David A. Goodpasture; and eight grandchildren.
The fourth of seven children born to Herbert and Mary Wylla Hardesty, Thelma was raised on a farm in the Blue Grass region of Kentucky.
She graduated from Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. After marriage, she and her husband, "M.G.," embarked upon a lifetime of service pastoring Methodist Churches in Virginia and Tennessee. In 1965, they settled at Ferrum College where M.G. served in college administration and continued to pastor local churches while Thelma mothered her brood of six children. A marvelous homemaker, wife and mother, she enjoyed her horses, Bonnie and Belle, raising flowers, quilting, sewing and collecting dolls. For years she was a featured artist with her tatting at the annual Blue Ridge Folk Life Festival at Ferrum College.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at St. James United Methodist Church in Ferrum, Va., with visitation one hour prior at the church. The burial will follow at Asbury United Methodist Church in Wythe County, Va. Arrangements are by Covenant Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Rev.
