Mrs. Darlene Ann Hanson, age 85, entered into rest on January 10, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born March 10, 1928 in Boxholm, IA to Lillie and Herbert Freeman. She was preceded in death by her husband, COL Jay Hanson USA (ret), and son LTC Lynn Hanson USA (ret). She is survived by her loving children, Lyle Hanson and wife Anne; COL Larry Hanson USA and wife COL Debra Spittler USA (ret); Diane Ness and husband Joseph; CDR Craig Hanson USN (ret) and wife Christine; daughter-in-law, June Hanson; grandchildren Robert Moffat and wife Cara, Kristin Wilson and husband Quinton, CPT Jay Hanson USA, Matt Hanson and wife Leslie, Jacob Ness and wife Daniele, Anna Stephens and husband Justin, Dr. Peter Ness and wife Leslie, Julie Ponder and husband Dr. Christopher Ponder, Jesse Ness, Victoria Ness, Isaiah Ness, Savannah Ness, Jennifer Hanson; fourteen great-grandchildren; sisters Marie Bengtson and Elaine Kauffman and husband Dan. Darlene graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, IA and taught school in Kalona, IA while her husband Jay attended Dental School at the University of Iowa. She traveled the world with Jay throughout his Army dental career and they were avid world travelers in retirement. She was devoted to her large family and her church, especially the United Methodist Women. The family would like to thank the staff of Emeritus at Oakwell Farms and Vitas Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Windcrest United Methodist Church Foundation. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 11:00 A.M at the Windcrest United Methodist Church, 8101 Midcrown, San Antonio, TX 78239. Burial will follow at 2:45pm at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach San Antonio, Texas 78209.
