Bellevue, Washington. Eric Thor Hanson, 45, went to be with his Redeemer on Monday, August 30, 2010, after a two-and-one-half year battle with brain cancer. Surrounded by family and friends - and held in prayer by loved ones around the world - Eric passed away miraculously pain free. Now, he is free at last.
He was born October 9, 1964. A devoted and playful father, Eric is remembered for making children laugh. He had a passion for teaching Sunday School, especially for boys, remembering the vital role of men in his own faith formation. His time was filled with reading colonial-American history and cooking with garlic. With a gift of communicating across cultures, Eric loved international travel, starting as a youth with family travels to Norway, studying abroad in Germany, adventures in Europe, teaching English in Changchun and Beijing, China, working in Hong Kong and Macau, and living with his wife and daughter in Monduli, Tanzania, East Africa. In Tanzania, he taught English at the MaaSae Girls Lutheran Secondary School and worked for Heifer International with his interest in micro-enterprise development. In spite of all the travels, the best place on earth was his uncle and aunt's farm in Union Grove, Wis. eating cousin Jim's sweet corn and Aunt Donna's cream puffs.
Eric is missed by his wife, Beth Elness-Hanson; and daughter, Anya, of Bellevue, Wash.; his parents, Gerald and Karen Hanson of Cupertino, Calif.; his sister, Corrine Devine, with her daughters, Erin and Megan, of Cupertino, Calif.; his sister, Barbara Hanson Castro with her husband, Manuel Castro, Jr., with their daughter, Regina, of San Dimas, Calif.; beloved uncles, aunts, and cousins in Racine County, Wis. and beyond; and many dear friends around the world. Memorial services were held Monday, September 6, 2010, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Bellevue, Wash.; Saturday, September 11, 2010, at Norway Lutheran Church, Wind Lake, Wis.; and Sunday, September 12, 2010, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Cupertino, Calif.
