by Janet Rainsdon Christensen
(This is my Great-Grandmother on my Mothers side. My name is Janet Raindson Christensen)

Johanna or Hanna Hansen was born April 27, 1830 at Overdamhuset Parrish of Blosstrod, Fredericksborg, Denmark. The Daughter of Hans Jensen and Anne Kristine Rasmussen.

In the year of 1851 or 1852 she married Jens Jensen of Copenhagen, Denmark. Their fist child, a son died in infancy. A few years later they heard the Gospel being preached by the Elders and were converted to the Church.

On April 18, 1857 Grandmother, with her husband and two small sons sailed from Copenhagen to Liverpool, England on the S.S. Westmoreland, April 25, 1857. This boat had 544 Saints, mostly Scandinavians, under the direction of Matthias Cowley. They arived in Philadelphia, PA May 31, 1857.

This group reached Iowa City by rail, June 9, 1857. This place was the outfitting for the Saints who crossed the plains in 1857. About the 15th of June Grandmother and Grandfather with part of the company commenced the journey toward the Valley from Iowa City with an Ox train under the Captaincy of Matthias Cowley. Grandmother walked most of the way across the plains. Her baby was a year old and there was a Sister Liljen uist in the company who was sick all the way. She had a baby boy the same age as Grandmother's so she nursed both of them until they reached Utah.

They arrived safe and well in Salt Lake City September 13, 1857. From Salt Lake City they went to Mt. Pleasant to live. Later they lived at Spanish Fork. In the Spring of 1860 they came to Hyrum, Utah. Being the fist settlers there. They camped at Camp Hollow for a month, they the settlers laid out a fort at Hyrum, where they built log housed to live in.

She was the mother of nine children, five sons and four daughters.
One son and two daughters died in infancy. After her family were raised she went out as a practical nurce, assisting the midwife in bringing babies into the world. For pay she would get whatever they had to spare. At one time she recieved some wool which she carded and spun into yarn on a spinning wheel, then used the yarn to knit stockings. Her husband died April 6, 1902. On April 30, 1903 she went to the Logan Temple and had their endowments. She also did temle work for their ancestors in Denmark. She was a good Latter Day Saint and died February 22, 1909. Age 79. Was buried at Hyrum, Utah.
