Death: Feb. 14, 1865

Johanne Sophie Jensdatter was born in Hovby, Fakse, Præstø, Denmark. She married Peter Hansen on 3 Nov 1848. Johanne and Peter took a peddler into their home who was selling his wares which he had obtained in his trips across the ocean. It is unclear if he was a friend or if the Hansen's had extra rooms and ran some kind of a hostelry. Evidently he had stayed at their home before however, on this occasion he had contracted the dreaded disease smallpox, exposing himself to the Hansen clan. Johanna took care of him and her family and eventually three of her four children died from the disease.

After joining the LDS Church, Johanne emigrated with her husband Peter Hansen & daughter Annie Sophia Hansen in a company of 565 Latter-Day Saints from Copenhagen, Denmark on 9 May 1861 on the ship "WALDEMAR" arriving in Keil, Germany on 10 May 1861 (see LDS/FHL Film# 025696). In Keil the LDS company was split with about 200 people taking the train to Altona and about 169 taking the train to Hamburg. The 1st company (200 people) left Altona on the ship "BRITANNIA" on 10 May 1861 and arrived in Hull, England on 12 May 1861. The 2nd company (169 people) left Hamburg on the ship "EUGENIA" on 11 May 1861 and arrived in Grimsby, England on 13 May 1861. Both companies took a train to Liverpool. On 16 May 1861 Johanne, Peter and daughter Annie Sophia left Liverpool on the ship "MONARCH OF THE SEA" and arrived in New York on 19 June 1861(see LDS/FHL Film# 025691). They took a train from New York to St. Joseph, Missouri where they boarded a river boat which pushed its way north to Florence Nebraska, arriving on the 1st or 2nd of July 1861. At Florence they outfitted with the "Samuel Wooley" wagon train (61 wagons, 338 people) and departed on 13 Jul 1861 and arrived in Salt Lake City on 22 Sep 1861(See Journal History 22 Sep 1861, p. 2-11). The family eventually settled in Hyrum, Cache, Utah where Johanne died about three and a half years later on 14 Feb 1865.
