I knew her as "Aunt Gene", as she was my father's older sister. She was married to Ralph Oscar Hanney (1902-1984). She was always designing and making plaster-cast figurines that she would 'fire' in her own kiln (which I think Uncle Ralph built for her). She really was quite talented. She sold most of them, but also, I believe, she gave some as special gifts to relatives and friends.

Always pleasant, she treated us like royalty, and always had ice cream or some other treat available. She loved to walk us around the small farm that they had on the property.

The only time I ever saw her sad or with tears in her eyes was when she looked at the picture of her son, Eugene. I knew his younger brother, Larry, although he was more my older bother's age. I had never met Eugene, to my knowledge, before he went off to help the Merchant Marines during World War II. He didn't return. If you'd like to here more of his story, click on his name below, in the Children section.

Eugene is back in his mother's arms, may God bless them both.
