Doris (Hanna) Balch was born October 7, 1910 in Martinsville, Nacogdoches County, Texas, and she died on January 12, 2009 in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas. She was the daughter of Frank and Laura (Fuller) Hanna. She was united in marriage with Ernest Balch, who preceded her in death in 1959. She was also preceded in death by one son, William David Balch; her parents; a brother; and a sister. Surviving family includes her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Georgia (Davis) Balch of Lufkin; daughter, Betty Laura Balch of Garland; granddaughters, Donna Sardina and husband Sal of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and Georgellen Evans of Coldspring, Texas; one great-grandson, Cody Evans of Coldspring, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Salvatore Sardina and wife Shelle of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and Josephine Behmke and husband Joe of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 2 great-great grandchildren, Juan Saucedo and Joey Behmke; sister, Mildred (Hanna) Smith of Southlake; and a number of nieces, nephews and other family members. Mrs. Balch was a member of Central Church of Christ and taught Sunday school classes for a number of years. She was a school teacher for some 38 years, including 12 years as the Angelina County School Superintendent. She also taught in Nacogdoches, San Augustine, Liberty and Angelina Counties. After retirement, she was active in several organizations, including Angelina retired Teachers and AARP, where she served in various official capacities. She did volunteer work through RSVP chiefly with the rhythm bands in nursing homes and as pianist for the Tune Chaser Quartet. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Neches House, Southland Health Care Center, the many friends, and special caregiver and friend Velma Dee Modisette. Services for Mrs. Balch will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2009 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel. Eli Borden, Minister of the Central Church of Christ, will be officiating with the assistance of Ed Bond and Dr. Jerry Burgess. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gipson Funeral Home. Gipson Funeral Home; Charlotte Partin, director.
