A Passing of a Pioneer
Mrs. Esther Folkins of Center Point Dead at an Advanced Age.
The following obituary of an aged and honored pioneer will be read with interest by many of the old settlers of the city and county: Center Point Journal: Esther Ann Hanna was born in Whitly, Ontario, Canada, August 26, 1829. She was married to Peter P. Folkins May 6, 1851, and they moved to Center Point, la.. May 4', 1855, and have resided here ever since. Sister Folkins joined the Methodist church before she was married and has continued as a member ever since, at least for fifty years or more. When she was but 5 years old she was badly burned, so badly that she did not walk, without crunches until she was 11 years old. The burn finally healed up and she had quite good health until twenty years ago, when she began to suffer from the effects of the burn, and this condition continued to increase until she finally died from the effects of the burn and not from cancer, as some have supposed. She died March 3, 1898, being 68 years 6 months and 7 days old. She leaves a husband and eight children, four sons and four daughters, a large circle of grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her loss. The funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. N. Chaffee, from the Methodist Episcopal church, and was largely attended. She died in the triumphs of a living, saving faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and has gone to enjoy her reward.
That God may bless and sustain the sorrowing friends is the prayer of the writer.
