Carrie Lucille was born in Walker, Michigan to Kenneth Hankinson and Nora (McNitt). She was the sister of Clara, William and Pauline.
Lucille grew up on a farm in Walker and later, fell in love with Walter Brehm. They were married in Grand Rapids in 1919 and eventually settled in the Detroit area where Walter and a partner owned a cement company. Lucille and Walter started their family and two sons were born. Ervin and William attended the Dearborn schools.
Eventually Lucille and Walter built a new home in Dearborn where they enjoyed their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Walter was meticulous about his yard and garden. The grass was perfect and the flowers were beautiful.
Lucille loved her birds. Walter gave her a huge birdbath for them to play in (it's still there today) and built a large bird feeder. Every scrap of food was saved for them. She would teach us to recognize and identify the different songs of each bird.
Lucille and Walter loved to travel and would do so with friends and family.
My favorite memories with Grandma: the passion flower vine outside her kitchen window, organizing her jewelry box, summer sleep overs, the pink peppermint candies in the crystal jar, 'naps' on her screened-in porch and the hair net she made me wear if I touched my hair while eating. She was warm and kind but stern, no nonsense.
