Birth: Jan. 17, 1863
Death: Feb. 11, 1938

From Hazleton PA Plain Speaker, Fri. Feb. 11, 1938

Sallie Hankinson, wife of Dr. Wallace S. Ayres, of 547 North Church street, died at the State Hospital this morning after a long illness. She had improved decidedly during the past year, but had a serious illness in October, and had a relapse at the end of the year, when she was taken to the hospital. Mrs. Ayres was the daughter of Elijah and Mary C. Schooley Hankinson, and was born at Millbrook, Warren County, New Jersey, January 17, 1863. When she was ten years old the family removed to Stillwater, in Sussex County, where her young womanhood was spent. For a few years she was a teacher in the schools of Sussex County, and in 1868 she was married to Wallace S. Ayres, a mining engineer then located at Kenvil, New Jersey. In 1895, Dr. Ayres came to Hazleton, and soon became known as one of the leading engineers of the anthracite region. Mrs. Ayres was a woman of a gracious personality which endeared her to all who came within her acquaintance. She took part in every movement for social betterment, until repeated illnesses prevented active participation. In early life she joined the Stillwater Presbyterian church, and her religious life was one of abiding faith. A close Bible student, she was able to the end of her life to repeat whole chapters of Scripture from memory, and her life exemplified the teachings of Holy Writ. Besides her husband, who survives her, she leaves a brother, Dr. Frank Hankinson of Staten Island, who retired from the New York City School System in 1936. The funeral services will be held at the Bachman Funeral Parlors tomorrow, Saturday evening at 8 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. W.H. Russell, D.D. The interment will be on Monday the 14th in the cemetery of the Yellow Frame church, in Warren County, New Jersey. In this, one of the oldest cemeteries of New Jersey, lie the remains of her ancestors, including Brig. General Aaron Hankinson and Col. William Hankinson, officers in the armies of the Revolution. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ayres number commissioned officers in the War of Independence among their ancestors.
