Erastus was born 25 Nov. 1831 in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana, USA, the son of Absalom Hankins (1792 1863) Catherine McCarty (1795 1860). He married 21 Jun 1868 Covington Sarah Bateman Hay (1843 1917). Erastus died 7 Jul 1909 in Kenton, Kentucky, USA. His brother was William T. Hankins.

Enlistment Date: 24 Apr 1861. Promoted to Full Sergeant on 25 Nov 1861. Promoted to Full Corporal on 01 Aug 1861.Enlisted in Company C, Ohio 13th Infantry Regiment on 06 May 1861. Enlisted in Company D, Ohio 13th Infantry Regiment on 26 Jun 1861. Mustered out on 28 Jun 1861. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 30 Sep 1864. Promoted to Full Captain on 25 Oct 1865. Mustered out on 05 Dec 1865.
