Barbara Joyce Hanes, 76, of Paxton died at 9 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, at her home.
Barbara was born July 24, 1931, at Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of Paul and Myrtle James West. She married Robert L. Hanes August 14, 1949, at the Bethel Church in Farmer City. He preceded her in death on June 20, 1989.
Surviving are three daughters and one son, Nancy (Eston) Ellis of Bellflower, Carolyn (Earl) Reinhart of Monticello, Sally (Glen) Filkin of Gifford and Randy (Patty) Hanes of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Julia Brown of Atlanta, Georgia; and numerous other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, David West and Paul I. West.
Her early years were spent in Mansfield, graduating from Mansfield High School in 1948 and graduating from Illinois Commercial College, Champaign, in 1949.
She worked as a bookkeeper, having been employed at Paxton Hospital and Birkey's Farm Store in Paxton. She and her husband owned and operated several restaurants, in both Paxton and Gilman, at one time. She was a member of the Federated Church in Paxton and sang in the choir and was a member and past matron of Prospect Chapter No. 367 O.E.S. She enjoyed playing the piano and played for Eastern Star functions throughout the state and for the local school system. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching and was an avid reader.
