Robert John was the son of William Handley of Northfleet. He was born in 1899 and grew up at 6 Hive Lane. He registered at Lawn Road School, Northfleet, in 1906.
In later life he worked as a labourer and lived in Rose Street, Northfleet, and was an athlete and runner and was said to be renowned for catching linnets in Dr Floods' Field.
He died at 3 Ames Road Swanscombe in November 1940 and was buried in Northfleet Cemetery, grave number 302L , his grave is unmarked.
