Edward Hand, 82, Hollidaysburg, passed away Tuesday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late David and Lillian (Halberstadt) Hand. He married Harriett Trazenfeld June 27, 1948, in Rockaway Park, N.Y. Surviving are his wife of 61 years; two children: Susan Bauder and Steven Hand, both of Hollidaysburg; and four grandchildren: Andrea Hand, David Hand, Nathaniel Hand and Brandon Bauder. He was preceded in death by his sister, Edith Hand. Edward graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, Brooklyn, N.Y., and received a bachelor's degree in business from Adelphi College, Garden City, N.Y. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a pharmacist mate first class in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1993 from Hermes Abrasives, where he worked as a distributor. Edward was a member of Temple Beth Israel. He enjoyed swimming, golf, bowling, ping-pong and watching sports. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and had a great sense of humor. Edward was kind-hearted, warm, enthusiastic and friendly to all he met. He was very generous and extended his generosity to many charitable organizations. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Mount Sinai Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi David Ostrich. In remembrance of Edward, those who wish may make contributions to the Alzheimer's Society. Arrangements are by E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona.
