The 1850 Census shows a John and Nancy Hampton (both age 34) living in Middle Township (which then included Union), Hendricks County, Indiana with children Melissa (age 12), Mary J. (age 11, born in Kentucky), G. Washington (age 8), James M. (age 6), Narcissa (age 5), John H. (age 4) and Sarah E. (age 0, born in Indiana). Later this family moved to the What Cheer, Keokuk County, Iowa area where Melissa, Narcissa and James M. are buried.
Although the inscription shows her father's first initial as A., this grave is likely that of the Sarah E. Hampton listed above.
