Norma Hammond Haley Dean was born April 14, 1921 to Datus and Bertha Hammond in Salt Lake City. Norma's father was instrumental in establishing the boy scout organization in Utah. Being the oldest of five sisters, Norma spent her childhood as a boy scout. She hiked, fished, camped and was throughout her life proud of these adventures.
Norma graduated from South High School before attending Utah State University and then the University of Utah where she studied education.
Norma married John Jarvies Haley who gave his life to our country as a fighter pilot serving in the Air Force. Together they had three wonderful boys: Scott, Mark and John. On Feb. 10, 1954, Norma married her darling, Kenneth W. Dean, and they with Norma's three rambunctious little boys (Scott, Mark, John) and Kenneth's lovely little girl (Barbara) became a family. Roger and Patricia followed, completing the brood.
Ken and Norma were lifelong members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together they served a service mission. On Dec. 27, 2008, Ken and Norma were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple, fulfilling a lifetime desire. It was a treasured moment for their family to celebrate the 89-year-old newlyweds.
Norma traveled the world. She loved new places, restaurants and shopping. Maui was a home away from home for Norma and Kenneth. They became true islanders during the winters they spent there with their friends and family.
Norma was an amazing cook. We will forever hunger for her potato salad, rolls, spaghetti sauce, mustard relish, chicken goop and cookies. Norma was a generous host and no one left her home hungry.
Norma was an elegant woman. She loved pretty things and created a home and a life that reflected that. She went to the beauty shop every week. Her toes, fingers and lips all shared the same hue. Her mother's art hung on her walls and she had a pair of Keds and a bracelet to match every blouse.
Family was Norma's life. She devoted every moment to serving, supporting and championing her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our favorites were her favorites. She shared our successes and made a celebration out of the smallest event. Anyone loved by Norma knows a special, unconditional kind of love. It is her gift to the world that anyone loved by her will continue to love as she did: perfectly.
Norma is survived by her children: Scott (Ron Calvert), Barbara Holmes, Mark (Leslie), John (Karen), Roger (Marsha), Patricia (Scott) Sorenson, 25 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held April 20 at 12:30 p.m. at the Tooele 13th Ward, 1025 Southwest Drive. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Interment, Tooele City Cemetery. Assisted by Aspen Funeral Services.
The family of Norma Dean wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Mountain West Hospice. They are administering angels. Over the years she has come to love all the ladies in the office and nurses at Dr. Charles Holt's medical practice. She considered Dr. Holt and Julia dear friends and she loved Darin Smith as a grandson. Thank you all so much.
