Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Lois Hammond Durrant, passed away peacefully of natural causes incident to age on Saturday, January 21, 2012 after a successful sixty-plus-year battle with Type I diabetes.

Lois was born November 22, 1927 to Datus Eugene and Bertha (Dearie) Hansen Hammond in Salt Lake City, Utah. As the youngest of five girls she grew up spending many special days together with her sisters and parents. Her sisters have always been her best friends.

After graduating from South High School, Lois attended the University of Utah where she studied elementary education. Following college, she taught kindergarten, loving each child who came through her class.

She married her sweetheart, William Stanford Durrant, on September 9, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They spent fifty-one wonderful years together before he passed away in July 2004. Together they had four children, being blessed to raise three sons. Always sweethearts, she looked forward to her reunion with her husband Stanford and their daughter Lois Denise, who died as an infant.

As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Lois spent her life serving her family and Heavenly Father. Living both in Utah and California during her married life, she developed many relationships and had numerous people who considered her a valued and loving friend. She served diligently in many leadership capacities in her church including Relief Society, Primary, and Scouting. She had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Lois taught not only by word but by loving example and taught her sons to be thoughtful and kind to others. Known as Nani to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and Whitey to her sisters, nieces, and nephews, she was quick with a hug and kiss and was always interested in hearing about their lives. She was a thoughtful listener and made sure that no one ever went on a trip without a container of Nani's cookies.

She will be remembered for her tears of joy, her cheering of her favorite sports teams, her beautiful cross-stitching, crocheting, and knitting, her honesty and quick wit, and most of all her love. Her last thoughts were of her family and wanting to make sure that they knew how much she loved them. She will be always in our hearts and greatly missed.

Lois is survived by her sons Stanford H. (Dianne), Michael J., and W. Jeffrey (Kristi), her three sisters Norma Dean, Arlene Stephenson, and Jeanne (Leo) Thorup, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter, her parents, her sister Virginia (Ginger), and four brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2012 in the Cottonwood Heights Stake Center (6890 South 2255 East), with a viewing on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary (3401 South Highland Drive (1495 East)) from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and one an hour prior to the services at the church.
