Gilmer Hammond Chatham, 90, of Watkinsville, died at her home on Sunday, October 11, 2009.

She was born Sunday, June 15, 1919, in Fairburn, Georgia, to George Allen and Velma Stone Hammond. After she graduated from Campbell High School in Fairburn, the family moved to East Point where she met and married Hugh E. Chatham in 1938. After being a homemaker and raising her children, she entered the workforce.

In 1987, she retired as Deputy Director of the Vital Records Service of the Department of Human Resources for the State of Georgia. To recognize the quality of her work and her significant contributions, on the day of her retirement, proclamations were issued by both the State of Georgia and the City of Atlanta, declaring that day as "Gilmer Chatham Day". At that time, she was the only Georgia State employee to have received such recognition by the City of Atlanta.

After retiring in 1986, she volunteered with Southwest Christian Hospice. In 1950, Gilmer and Hugh joined Connally Drive Baptist Church in East Point, where they were active members for 45 years. She served as a Sunday School teacher, Choir Member, Church Clerk, Vacation Bible School Director, and on several Pastor Search Committees.

In 1995, Gilmer and Hugh moved to Watkinsville, where they joined Mars Hill Baptist Church. There she served as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Senior Adult Choir, in the Homebound ministry, and on a Pastor Search Committee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh E. Chatham, and two brothers, George A. Hammond and Russell Hammond. She is survived by her three children and their families - Douglas Marlin & Betty Chatham of Loganville, Robert Gerald & Diane Chatham of Fayetteville, and Georganne & Curtis Murdock of Watkinsville, by her brother Gerald Morris Hammond of Alabaster, Alabama, and by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 15, 6-8 pm at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home West in Bogart, Georgia. The Funeral Service is Friday, October 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Mars Hill Baptist Church in Watkinsville with Dr. Charles Jones and Rev. Mike Sarratt officiating. Honorary Pall Bearers will be members of the Spirit Sunday School Class of Mars Hill Baptist Church. Interment is Friday, October 16, at 4 pm at College Park Cemetery in College Park, GA. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Gifts may be made to Mars Hill Baptist Church (Graceful Giving Fund), Covenant Care Services, Southwest Christian Hospice, or Odyssey HealthCare Hospice. Lord & Stephens Funeral Home West is in charge of arrangements. Published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on October 14, 2009.
