Oliver Hammond, son of Peter and Jane (Long) Hammond, was born in 1825 in Jefferson County, Ohio.
Oliver Hammond married Hannah Branch 9 Oct 1851 in Meigs County Ohio, the ceremony performed by Hannah's father the Rev. Sam'l S. Branch. Oliver's sister Mary Hammond married Hannah's brother Cyrenus "Si" Branch a year earlier. All four emigrated to Wayne co Illiinois in 1853 with Hannah's parents and other church and family members. Oliver and Hannah had two children, Laura J. in 1857 and George W. who only lived a month in 1859.
And then came the war.
Cyrenus signed on as a Waggoner, Co I, 54th Illinois Volunter Infantry. Oliver Hammond enlisted 09 August 1862 at Xenia Ill as Corporal, promoted to Full Sergt, in C Co. 111th Inf Reg. IL, commanded by Capt. Clark.
The War Between the States was also a war between brothers, cousins, friends and neighbors - and some of them were women. Not content to send her husband off to war alone, Hannah joined up too, unofficially, bringing along her 8 year old daughter, Laura.
Oliver Hammond died in Gen'l Hospital, Davis Island, NY Harbor on 11 March 1865 of measles and chronic diahrrea.
