Chief mining engineer for Cecil Rhodes in Africa.
Involved in the "Jameson Raid".
Along with Theodore Marburg, he was one of the founders in 1910 of the American Society for the Judicial Settlement of International Disputes. He became its president.
In 1915, he organized the World Court League and took part in the formation of the League to Enforce Peace.
He was on the cover of "Time" magazine, May 10, 1926.
Buried on June 11, 1936.
